VEIT SCHMIDLEITNER
As a developer and researcher for NASA and BASF, Schmidleitner's artistic tendencies push technology and materials beyond their considered use to produce sculptures and paintings that take the viewer to an unrecognisable terrain. Using principles of metamerism to deepen the relations between color and light with pigments developed and used exclusively by Schmidleitner allows the colours and shapes to form their own visual language.
Physical layers of metal offer fragments of an unfinished narrative that suggests more questions than answers. The cuts and bends of the metal and high-gloss finishes create distorted reflections, revealing not only the artwork itself but the uncertain reality in which it exists.
The precise and calculated work is offset by the chemical reactions of applying lacquer, which can yield varied and unanticipated results. Using these traditional lacquer techniques with modern technologies gives Schmidleitner's work an energy that communicates on levels beyond our present physical reality.
Schmidleitner describes the correlation between the act of creating and building something out of nothing; to strive for the new and unseen; to question everything.
